Norway to switch off FM in 2017
On 16 April, the Ministry of Culture announced a national FM-switch off, to complete the transition to digital radio. The switchover will begin in the North on 11 January 2017 and will be implemented region by region, concluding 13 December 2017.

The assets and ongoing business of Factum Electronics AB (Sweden) and Broadcast UK Limited trading as Radioscape (UK) have been acquired from the administrator of VDL S.A. (France) by Digital Broadcast Technologies Limited (UK). Digital Broadcasting Technologies has been established to drive forward the growth and development of the business and is led by the company’s existing management team.

Czech Radio powers up to go digital

Experts at Czech Radio have unveiled a roadmap to guide the country’s journey to digital radio output (DAB/DAB+). The plan identifies appropriate legislation, national coordination, adequate financing, private sector engagement, support for quality content and new services, a solid information and marketing campaign and statutory support for DAB receivers as the 7 steps toward digital broadcasting in the Czech Republic.

Paneda wins another contract for 22 tunnels in Norway

Vatican Radio looks to Europe’s digital radio future

Father Federico Lombardi, Director of Vatican Radio, commented that Vatican Radio covers a wide range of issues, with an emphasis on peace, religious freedom, human rights, dialogue between religions and Christian denominations.” Eugenio La Teana, head of research and development at RTL 102.5 Hit Radio added: “DAB/DAB+ digital radio is progressing in Italy, as well as across Europe. There is now a clear path towards digitisation of radio at the European level”.

DAB+ coming to Flanders

This spring, DAB+ will be available in Brussels and its surroundings. Initially the stations launching in these areas will be Top Radio, VBRO Radio, Radio Maria, Radio FG and Radiostad en Family Radio. “DAB+ is not the future, DAB+ is now!” said Bart Bosmans, CEO Norkring Belgium. “This new technology also offers many other features, such as better traffic, sending additional data and slideshows. DAB+ offers incredible benefits for both the radio and for the listeners. DAB+ is now live. The platform has the capacity to welcome additional radios.

DAB listening grows in Norway

Latest figures released by Digital Radio Norge covering the last quarter of 2014 show a strong increase of DAB listening at 36%. In a survey by TNS Gallup, the report also showed that Norway has experienced a growth of DAB+ listening in car to 17%, an increase from 10% the year before.

EBU Digital Radio Toolkit ‘Compete on content, co-operate in technology’

A major research project led by the Media Intelligence Service of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) has identified a range of factors central to the successful deployment of terrestrial radio digitisation across Europe. The launch of the ‘Digital Radio Toolkit’ follows a six month-long investigation into the experiences and best practices of the three countries which are leading the launch of digital terrestrial radio in Europe: Norway,Switzerland and the United Kingdom.

Smooth Extra goes live on DAB

Global Radio has launched its latest new digital radio station on national DAB, replacing Smooth Xmas. The original Smooth Radio service continues to be available on local DAB in many parts of the country, alongside transmissions on FM and AM. Global Radio meanwhile plans to launch an offshoot of Heart on national DAB in the New Year.

MeinungsBarometer has published the first Digital Radio DAB+ Auto Report for Germany. This comprehensive industry survey comes three years after the country’s DAB+ launch and includes data on relevant cars available on the German market, broken down by manufacturer to include report on the level of equipment with DAB+ receivers on customer interest, sales success and forecasts. To complete the survey, decision makers for all relevant German car brands were interviewed. Chapter summaries only are now available to WorldDMB members.

Members of the TC come from all types of industries including but not limited to: manufacturers (receiver, vehicle, professional equipment, test and measurement equipment, chip), research and development, solution providers, broadcasters and regulators, and network operators.
The Technical Committee meets four times a year and continues to focus on the continuing development of the standards. This year the key areas of focus include hybrid, mobile and automotive.
