An exciting start to 2016 for digital radio

Patrick HannonPatrick Hannon, President, WorldDAB

The first quarter of 2016 has seen a number of interesting developments in the world of DAB.

Probably the most significant has been the launch of the LG Stylus 2, the first smartphone with DAB+ digital radio.  The phone was launched at Radiodays Europe in Paris – and is receiving strong promotional support from broadcasters in Australia, Belgium, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway and the UK.   This is an important first step towards our goal of ensuring that DAB is fitted as standard in multiple mobile devices.

Radiodays Europe also saw another important announcement – the establishment of the European Digital Radio Alliance.  This group of senior executives from both public and private broadcasters has been created with the aim of building European support for DAB digital radio.  WorldDAB will be working closely with this group to ensure we are closely aligned.  Our aim is to make sure we use the resources of both organisations to maximise our impact with external audiences.

In the last three months, WorldDAB has been involved in several meetings and events in different parts of the world – in Paris (twice), Barcelona, Brussels, Geneva, Istanbul, Kuala Lumpur, Kiev, Antwerp and Lesotho.  Particularly encouraging is the level of interest we are now seeing beyond Western Europe.  We hope to see further progress in the next 18 months.

Looking ahead, our next major event will be in Brussels on 11th May.  This is the WorldDAB Automotive event:  Drive to Digital – Europe.  I am pleased to announce that this event is being produced in association with the Netherlands EU Presidency 2016.  The event will bring together national policymakers, broadcasters, automotive manufacturers and officials from the European Commission.  Our aim is to encourage vehicle manufacturers to fit DAB+ as standard across Europe – and to gain active support for DAB digital radio from the European commission.

I hope you will be able to join us there.  To register, just follow this link.

Kind regards

Patrick Hannon, President, WorldDAB
